As an artist obsessed with nostalgic nostalgic images of childhood, David Bromley only had one way to publish his work - as a satchel full of schoolbooks. "There's been approaches to do a book for about four or five years now - but I don't think I'm old enough to start combing over my life" Bromley, 49, said. "If I was going to do something, I wanted it to be a picture book first and foremost".
A Picture Book First and Foremost is the title of the three-volume set, which covers Bromley's childhood paintings, his nudes and photographs of him at work in Melbourne, where he moved from Adelaide three years ago. "I thought it wouldn't be complete without a little but of a fly-on-the-wall look into some of the environments that i work in and some of the people that flow through my life", he said.
Those include pianist David Helfgott and singer Kate Ceberano, with whom Bromley is working on a series of Children's stories. "Its based around our children's love of music," said Bromley, who has a daughter Holly, 6, and sons Willem, 3, and Arlo, four months, with partner Tori-Dixon-Whittle. Bromley launches his books at an invitation-only function at the BMW Showroom on West Tce tonight, with a public signing at Extra Newsagency, Hyde Park, on Saturday from 2pm to 3.30pm. - Patrick McDonald, Arts Editor.
